The Blended Household
It’s become a common figure in American families today. But blending households comes with a very unique set of challenges. As if just learning to get along wasn’t challenging enough!
Finding Room for Everything
Blending families can be wonderful, but there are a few tricky things you’ll need to navigate along the way. One of the biggest issues? Finding room for everything. It’s easy math: two families’ worth of furniture under one roof adds up to one pretty cramped living space. Something’s got to give! Multiple dining room sets, china sets, sofas, large screen tvs…. It’s overwhelming just to think about it! But how do you decide what to keep and what to purge?
Function First
Probably the easiest place to begin in determining which items to keep is functionality. Granted, there will generally be a few areas where sentimentality may take the lead in decision making. This is to be expected. But realize, you’re probably in for a bumpy ride if every item seems to hold deep sentimental value for you. Compromising with the one you love may not be easy, but it is an excellent way to sow into the foundation of your experience together in your new home.
Style Matters
After you choose which items are the best candidates to be classified as “keepers”, take a look at how well they work together in terms of style. You may find that a quality item or two may be better to sell and replace in order to create a more cohesive look for your new blended home. It may sting a little, but in the end, it’s worth it. Many families choose to rent a storage unit to harbor their possessions in the early stages of processing and assimilation. Whatever you do, be sure to have an end date in mind, and stick to it!
